Yoga and writing as wonderful tools for self-discovery and self-awareness.

Combining movement and breath with reflective writing, we will access our creativity and inner ideas. In this class, we will explore freewriting and reflection tied to breath and gentle motions as we greet the New Year. Students will be invited to explore some ideas of self-compassion and visioning for the coming year while reflecting on 2022 in their own body’s breath rhythm and gentle yoga movements. Writing can be creative, narrative, introspective – whatever you need! Restorative yoga between each writing will facilitate both breath and words.

We will begin by engaging in a reflection on the year which has just passed. Close your eyes, take a breath and travel back across the past 12 months. What images, people, places or thoughts emerge? Using freewriting and the words of Laura Rendón, “If I stop and reflect…then I can embrace the shadow of the event with greater case,” we will capture a flurry of words and then choose one for an extended reflective writing.

Our second writing will be present-centered and inspired by Tina Welling’s words that “We can begin a new relationship with the earth immediately by…becom[ing] aware of each of your senses”. Engaging all five senses, we will bring ourselves into the moment and consider its possibilities. In this place, in this space, what do you feel, see, smell, taste and hear?

What do we hope for the New Year? The third writing will invite you to reflect on Wendell Barry’s poem, “The Peace of the Wild Things,” and envision what 2023 may bring. What do you need in the New Year? What do you hope for?

Finally, we will return to a present-centered writing. As Alexandria Peary teaches, “The Ability to Write is Always Present”. We will breathe deeply and reflect back on the day, the past year and the words each student has expressed.

** Each student will receive a notebook, pen and handout at the beginning of class to record your writing. Props (mats, blocks, bolsters, blankets) are available at the studio for your use, but you are welcome to bring your own as well. Tea and water will be available throughout the class. Please arrive about 10 minutes before the beginning of the class to check in and prepare your mat for class. Spaces are limited, so registration in advance is suggested.

** 4.0 hrs. CEU for YOGA ALLIANCE members will be offered
(3contact hours + 1 non-contact hour)

Guided by Lydie Ometto & Betsy Weems

Betsy Weems ryt200:

Betsy came to yoga over 20 years ago as a runner looking for longevity and flexibility. She stayed and, in 2014, became an RYT-200 yoga teacher through Inner Sea Yoga with Lydie Ometto. Since that time, she has taught restorative, flow, prenatal and yoga for athletes.
For over 18 years, Betsy has also been a composition instructor at East Tennessee State University. With the addition of yoga training, she began to explore the intersection of breath and reflective writing with her students. As a Basic Writing instructor, she has come to rely on the use of Contemplative Pedagogies, especially breathwork, freewriting and reflection, to assist her writing students in taking time to think, relieving anxiety and learning to trust themselves as authors. She is currently completing the data gathering phase of her dissertation for a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition at Old Dominion University.

Lydie Ometto e-ryt500:

An Integrative Wellness Practitioner, a lifelong enthusiastic yoga therapist (c-iyt) and teacher (e-ryt500), an artist at heart, a creative physical & massage therapist, transformational wellness coach, breath worker and energy worker, and surely a lover in supporting people to live abundantly by seeing the unique beauty within themselves.

Lydie brings to her classes a mixture of classical Hatha and Integrative Yoga, with a creative knowledge on chakras, mudras, mantras, as well as an exquisite awareness on the expression of the asanas (postures). By weaving philosophy, life wisdom, meditation, guided relaxation and her love for Nature into the package, a total life realignment is experienced by her students, clients and anyone who connects to her sharing.
